Sticky eyes in newborns can be caused by a blocked tear duct. This is a common condition that typically resolves on its own within the first year of a baby's life. In the meantime, there are several steps you can take to help alleviate the symptoms:
Gently clean the eyes with a warm, wet cloth or cotton ball several times a day. This will help remove any crusting or discharge around the eyes.
Use a clean, dry cotton swab or finger to massage the tear duct, which is located at the inner corner of the eye near the nose. This can help unblock the duct and allow tears to flow more easily.
Avoid exposing the eyes to irritants, such as smoke or strong chemicals.
Consult a Pediatrician, who may recommend using an antibiotic ointment or drops to help prevent or treat any infection.
If the symptoms don't improve, or if your baby is having trouble seeing, please consult with pediatrician as the problem may need further examination and treatment.
